Middle of Nowhere = Western Kansas
I'm back from Hugoton!
Crush (I don't know why I use everyone else's name but I feel weird using his name on here) called at 7:30 am Saturday. Yeah, it was early and I was tired. I think he felt bad about waking me up/ me driving to see him and he told me that we could meet in Wichita sometime. Well, silly me, I decided to go anyways, called my parents, got ready and left here about 10:00 am.
I drove and drove and drove some more. The grass started turning into scrubby patches of brown and all hills and trees disappeared. The directions were surprising accurate (I didn't expect much with directions like turn right when you see a turn lane.). Only one problem- it took soooooooooo long. After driving for 6 hours, I thought I was almost there. I made the last turn and saw . . ."Hugoton 23". So here I was in the middle of nowhere and still had half an hour to go! Finally, I got there at 4:30, after only 6 1/2 hours of driving.
Needless to say, I was pretty much dead the rest of the day. As soon as I got there, He suggested that we pick up some groceries. My eyes glazed over, I said okay. On the road, I figure out that we are going to Liberal, about 45 minutes away. I just daze there, back, and the rest of the night.
Sunday was nice though. I got to see the town, we watched a couple of movies, and took the son to the park. Hugoton is in the middle of nowhere but it is a nice town, I can see why He likes it.
Today was the first day of school so yesterday I helped staple the rules and expectations together and helped work on his webpage (okay, I tried to help, his eyes were as glazed over as mine had been Sat.). Then, today, we got up at 6:30 and I left at 7:30.
Somehow I missed my turn. I got to Sublette and knew it was wrong. I stopped for directions at a gas station and was told to just stay on U.S. 56 until Wichita. So I stayed on 56 and prayed I would find my way home. After seeing tumbleweed and bison, I was really worried. I stopped on the side of the road, pulled out my Kansas map and saw that 56 did not go to Wichita but joined with U.S. 50, which goes through Emporia. So, I followed that and got home in just 5 hours! How did I manage to drive for 1 1/2 hours less when I got lost? Maybe I should get lost more!
Anyways, I had a very nice trip and really enjoyed getting to see where he lives. It was also nice to see that those mythical Western Kansas towns like Kingman, Emma Creek, Meade, and Sublette really DO exist. I'm not going back for another year though!
